Why Are YOU A Tightwad?
There are many reasons to being a tightwad. For me it was that I had children that depended on me for everything. I had to clothe and feed these children. I was 18 at the time and married to a man older than me. He had a child from a previous marriage, we also had my sister living with us, after my mothers death. So here I was 18 with a husband, 2 girls, ages 8 and 10. I was trying to work a full time job, go to college and take care of the house and all that entails. I thought this is crazy. There has to be another way. Well, I didn’t know at that time there was a thing call tightwaddery, or even thrift, much less how to go about saving money. I got started in being a tightwad after reading The Tightwad Gazette by Amy Dacyczyn. I got a copy of this book from my then sister in law in the early 1990’s.
I instantly wanted to learn how to save money. I was hooked. I like to see how much I can save. My children and I play a little game at meal time. We would see how little we had to spend to make a good meal. We try different recipes. We have a wide variety of choices. We don’t feel limited in any way. Here it is almost 20 years later. Those two girls are raised and on their own with a sense of who they are and where they came from. They are both educated and productive in life. They are good stewards of what has been given to them. I now have 2 teenage daughters at home. I have instilled the same values in them.
When my youngest one was still in elementary school, she carried a lunch box. She did not have all the store bought bags of snacks and chips in her box. Instead she had carrot and celery sticks, of course she had the “ranch” dressing, in a container from yogurt we saved. She had PB&J sandwich in a sandwich keeper, bought at a yard sale, she had frozen yogurt, that was just right to eat by the time lunch rolled around, a “thermos” more like a plastic bottle, with juice, and some homemade cookies. One day one of the little girls at her table asked why she always had such cool things to eat for lunch. My little genius just smiled and said “Because my Mommy is a tightwad.” Of course the little girl asked what a tightwad was, and my baby said she won’t spend money unless it is important. Now mind you my daughter did not tell me this story. The teacher called and asked for a parent teacher meeting. I was fearful she had done something wrong, my daughter not the teacher.
When I got to school, the teacher relayed this story to me. I had to laugh. This is a way of life for her. I tell you this story to make a point. That point is this. Only adults seem to give the names like tightwad, penny pincher, cheapskate, skin flint or thrifty a derogatory meaning. My children have never felt bad or even tried to hide that we are tightwads. They have the things they need to be happy. The rest of the stuff is just that stuff.
Frugality (also known as thrift or thriftiness ) is the practice of acquiring goods and services at minimum cost, achieved via economical restraints or creative measures. Frugality can be related to the idea of being conservative or conserving money.
As the 4th of July comes, we wanted to remind you of some grilling tips we brought you in previous articles (like the BBQ). Also if you are looking for sides to go along with your meat, check out our recipe forum. We also have some downloadable PDFs. Just go to the download section.
Enjoy your BBQ, picnic, fireworks, and what ever you have planned to help you celebrate your Indepence Day.
Happy Father’s Day to all fathers out there.I hope your day is wonderful.Enjoy all the thingsyour family has planned for you.
For those of you who did not know, Father’s Day is believed to have started June 19, 1910, by a young lady who wanted to honor her father. It seems that her mother died during child birth and her father raised six children including a new born by himself. While she had wanted to celebrate on her father’s birthday, June 5, there was not enough time to prepare. So it was and still is celebrated on the third Sunday of June.
Even while some presidents such as President Wilson (in 1916) and Present Coolidge (in 1924) was in support of the idea of Father’s Day, but President Johnson (in 1966) signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day in 1966.President Nixon made Father’s Day a permanent national observance in 1972.
Fathers are very important to raising children.Fathers are significant in the development and emotional well being of the child(ren).Fathers are depended on for spiritual, emotional, physical, financial and social well being.Fathers also play different and important role for daughters and sons, for a daughter the father is the ideal man and is also the one they really adore, and for sons the father is an idol and the strongest man they will try to emulate.
The role of father has been seen traditionally to be more of a provider and guide for his children, however with both parents working today that has changed.Today fathers are involved in child rearing as much as the mother. They are rolling up their sleeves and changing diaper and putting baby down for a nap.
So it is important to honor you father on this Father’s Day.And if you happen to be lucky and also have a step-father, remember all the things he has done for you through out the year and celebrate him.Remember he has taken an extreme step of taking care of you by choice. He has made the choice to care for and love you.Remember to say thank you.

Frugal Father's Day Gift Ideas
I belong to a group on www.cafemom.com. I found this post in there about Thirfty Father's Day Gifts. With permission from the author JHanc968 I am posting it on our website in hopes you will find it as helpful as we have. Thank you for allowing us to use your information, as always we appreciate your hard work and research.
Communication - Sometimes it is hard, but spending time to really communicate how important your father is to you can be the best Father’s Day gift. Don’t run to the card store and buy a card - spend a little time and try to write down on a blank card in your own words how important and wonderful your father is.
Weed The Garden - You can save him many hours of work in the garden, freeing him up to do other things that he would enjoy instead of the tedious work of weeding.
Home Maintenance Work - Just write down all of the things that you did and present that to him - he’ll be thrilled.
I hope you had as much fun as we did on the cuisine around the world last week. This week we are visiting places like Russia, Hawaii, India, Germany, Greece, and Africa. If you would like to join us, we have a downloadable PDF for you that includes the menu.It is complete with desserts that are found in the countries. This is the menu we are following, We hope you will join us.
If you have a favorite meal from any of these cultures or the ones from last week, please share them with us.
Bon Appetite.
Remember these are great tightwads dinners, if you make a double batch you will have enough to either freeze for another dinner, or even a great tightwads lunch.

Menu-Cuisine Around The World
When we were making out our menu for the next two weeks, we decided to do a trip around the world. We wanted to make simple and thrifty recipes. Not only did we not want to blow our food budget, we wanted the girls to be able to help in the preparation of the meals.
We have learned that if the recipe is too complicated the girls don’t want to help with them. This is not because they don’t understand them, it is simply because they take too long and the girls grow bored with the process.I think this is true for most of us.How many times have you thought that you would like to create a meal you have either had at a restaurant or you have seen in advertisements just to decide that it is just too complicated? At the end of the day who really wants to stand in the kitchen cooking for hours. Not me.So we have found some recipes that you can create at home. They are some of the things we have either had in restaurants (on our special occasions out) or have seen advertised for restaurants and we wanted to see if we could make a tightwads dinner and have a tightwads lunch the next day.
This week we have had or are going to have the following:
Bar-B-Queing has long be a favorite of our family. My husband has this old smoker, you know the kind, it looks like a 55 gallon drum cut in half. When he fills it full of wood and strikes the match to it, knows dinner is going to be great. When the rest of us smell the smoke we know we are in for a treat. Then only thing he does better than the bbq is make popcorn, however, that is another article.
When Michael cranks up the grill, I like to smoke a lot of meat at one time. This way I can put it in meals and either put it in the refrigerator or in the freezer. It is no extra work on him to smoke more meat than we will eat in one meal, and it makes meal time for the next few days easier on me.I can take out what I will need for the meal and heat it in the rotisserie. If you don’t have a rotisserie, don’t worry you can do the same in a toaster oven or even a microwave.
When I asked for tips on how to grill, here is what I got.“Now honey, you know the grill is mine and you don’t need to worry about it.”I had to explain to him I did not want to step into his “domain” ,I simply wanted information. I told him I wanted to do an article on grilling, I thought since so many are going to do so today, I would post some tips to remember. So here is what I got.
As the weather warms, I realize I need to drop the last few pounds of winter. This is a good time to do that. The weather is warm enough to have salads as meals and still cool enough in the evening to walk around the block a few times. So I thought I would put together a few salad recipes for myself and you.
As I have stated, we don’t like to have to heat up the house in the summertime. We live where the weather is hot and humid in the summer. The last thing I want to do is stand around the hot stove or fire up the oven to prepare a meal for my family.Don’t get me wrong, I love them and would do almost anything for them, however, I just don’t really want those type of meals.I want something that is lighter and has little or no preparation to it.I also don’t want to stand around my kitchen getting hotter and stickier.
So don’t put up your Crockpot yet. There are still things to be cooked in it.Now you don’t think that the Crockpot is a winter appliance only do you?A Crockpot is great for everyone from the busy homemaker to the office mom to the work at home mom to the busy dad.It is great for anyone who has things to do and is tired by the time it is time to make dinner. You just throw a few items in and set it, when it is time to eat, it is ready. What could be easier. Here are a few recipes that can help you with your summertime dinners so you are not slaving at a hot stove on a hot day. Remember the Crockpot is the tightwads friend. There is no easier way to have a tightwads dinner or lunch than to throw it in the Crockpot.
School is has about another week left. The children will be out on summer break. Now is the time not only to start planning the activities for the summer to keep your children occupied, but what you are going to feed them for the weeks and months to come.We don't do a lot of cooking in the house in the summer time.We find that it heats up the house and have to spend more to cool it back down, so we look for recipes that don’t require us to use the oven.In the week to come we will be sharing with you the techniques and the recipes we use through out the summer to feed our crew.We hope you find them useful.
